The Nigerian Government has approved the implementation of the National Industrial Relations Policy (NIRP), a framework aimed at promoting harmonious workplace relations between employers and employees.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced this on Thursday while briefing State House Correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Council Chambers.
According to Idris, the policy will regulate the activities of trade unions and other actors within Nigeria’s industrial relations landscape.
“The policy will ensure seamless workflow, promote social dialogue and tripartite cooperation among government, employers and workers, and also align Nigeria’s industrial practices with global standards, including those set by the International Labour Organization,” he said.
He emphasised that maintaining strong industrial relations is a national priority.
“The policy underscores the importance of maintaining industrial relations as a national priority that requires immediate and ongoing attention,” Idris added.
The Minister noted that the NIRP approval addresses the persistent problem of industrial actions resulting from the absence of a comprehensive national framework.
