The Federal Government’s campaign against illegal mining is gaining traction, as the Mining Marshals executed a raid last week on an unlawful mining site in Nasarawa State, North-Central, Nigeria.

The Commander of the Mining Marshals, ACC John Attah in a statement said during the operation in Rafin-Gabas, Agwada Area Council, authorities arrested three Chinese nationals and two Nigerians for mining without proper authorisation.

He noted that the suspects were found extracting fluorite, zinc, lead, and tin, admitting to illegal activities at the site since December 15, 2021, across five cadastral units.

ACC Attah further said that despite warnings to regularise their operations, the company continued its illicit activities, leading to significant revenue losses for the federal government.

The Nigerian government reiterrated its commitment to clean up the mining sector, with Mining Marshals poised to continue their efforts until the environment is secure for legitimate investors.

The Mining Marshals, specialised unit of 2,570 officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have been actively targeting illegal mining operations. They have made over 200 arrests nationwide, with around 140 individuals currently facing prosecution.
