Nigerian government harmonise information on Dams and irrigation scheme

The Minister of Water Resources in Nigeria, Mr Suleiman Adamu, has harmonised information on Dams and irrigation scheme in the country as part of effort to develop the Sector.

Mr Suleiman Adamu, stated this in Abuja at the launching ceremony of compendium and Digital map of Dams in Nigeria.

The Minister during the unveiling of the registry said that, the data provided in the document will be of value to dam owners or operators and other stakeholders.

He explained that the Nigerian government has produced a registry that documents all dams in the country, adding that the document is in line with the standard of the International Commission on Large Dams.

“The compendium and Digital map of Dams in Nigeria is a national registry of all Dams in the country. The status of each Dams are presented mentioning the compendium Dams in Nigeria is in conformity with standard of the International commission on large Dams (ICOLD) the data provided there in will be immense value of dams owners or operators and other interested parties.

“In order to ensure availability and water for various purpose, the Federal government through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, State and local governments as well as corporate organisation and individuals have several years embarked on construction of Dams, Dams construction is borne out of the need to harness the immense potentials benefits derivable for them,” Mr Adamu said.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources Mrs Didi Walson Jack, represented by Mr Benson Ajisegiri emphasized that Water Recourses sector has one of the key components in irrigation which remains a very important agent of food sustainability which is achieved through the utilization of Dams and has been during Force towards achieving the desired result.

She also said, continuous update of the Platform must be sustained to provide accurate data for utilization by utilization by Nigeria and foreign counterpart.
