The Nigerian government has pledged to fully compensate communities displaced by the construction of the 700-megawatt Zungeru Hydro Power Plant in Niger State.

The commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting in Abuja between Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu and the Compensation and Resettlement Committee, led by Niger State Deputy Governor Alhaji Yakubu Garba.

In a statement issued by Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser on Strategic Communication and Media Relations to the Minister of Power, Adelabu emphasised the importance of accurate identification of affected communities. Initial surveys identified 133 communities for compensation, but claims from over 300 communities have since been presented.

“The Federal Government is committed to fulfilling its obligations to displaced communities. However, sincerity in demands and claims is essential,” Adelabu said, urging stakeholders to cooperate to resolve outstanding issues.

Adelabu acknowledged progress, noting that 90% of affected residents have been compensated, with ₦22 billion ($28.6 million) already disbursed. Approximately ₦2.2 billion ($2.8 million) remains to be paid, though new claims are under review.

The minister thanked the Niger State Government for its support in allocating land and preventing unrest among affected residents.

He highlighted the region’s importance as home to 80% of Nigeria’s hydropower stations, including Jebba, Kainji, Shiroro, and Zungeru.

Niger State Deputy Governor Garba expressed gratitude for the federal government’s efforts and reassured its commitment to restraining communities from taking legal action. He emphasized the state’s cooperation to ensure the project’s success and promised to encourage claimants pursuing court cases to withdraw them.

The Zungeru Hydro Power Plant is one of Nigeria’s largest energy projects, aiming to boost electricity generation and support national development.
