The Federal Government says it will support the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA, on its enforcement of environmental regulations and implementation of policies.

Mrs Amaka Ejiofor, Assistant Director, Press, NESREA, communicated this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja,

The statement said the Minister of State, Environment, Dr ziaq  Salako, made the pledge while on a maiden visit to NESREA in Abuja.

Salako said that the support was to protect the environment and improve the lives of the citizens.

The minister pointed out that the pivotal role of enforcement was to encourage growth and development, saying that in any society, enforcement was the key.

If you make laws and they are not enforced, you breed disorder.

“The role of NESREA is very key and very central, and it is our role to support NESREA to deliver on its mandate,” the minister said.

He lauded the efforts of the agency in achieving a circular economy through the Extended Producer Responsibility Programme, EPR.

Salako said that the federal government was interested in the circular management of solid waste to ensure that it does not end up in drainages and waste dumps.

Earlier, the Director – General of NESREA, Prof. Aliyu Jauro commended the minister for his doggedness in ensuring the scaling up of the development of policies and programmes.

He said this was to enhance environmental enforcement and protection in Nigeria.

The minister inspected some infrastructure critical to the enforcement of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, CITES, among others.
