The Nigerian government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that migration from Nigeria to other countries occurs legally, emphasising both the economic benefits and the safety of migrants.

Nigeria’s Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, made this statement while hosting a delegation from Germany’s IHK Giessen-Friedberg Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Abuja.

The visit was facilitated by former Nigerian Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who now serves as the Managing Partner of public relations firm Bruit Costaud.

The discussions focused on enhancing legitimate labour migration and advancing Nigeria’s vocational training system to foster economic growth.

Dingyadi assured the delegation of the government’s readiness to collaborate in achieving mutual goals, particularly in streamlining migration pathways and skill development.

“We encourage legal migration to ensure the safety of our people and to maximize the benefits for both countries,” Dingyadi said.

He emphasised that labour migration and vocational training align with the ministry’s core mandate, which aims to create employment opportunities for Nigeria’s growing youth population.

The Minister highlighted the importance of vocational training in equipping Nigerians with valuable skills that would not only improve their employability abroad but also contribute to national development upon their return.

“Some of those trained will migrate, gain experience, and later return to train others, creating a sustainable cycle of skill development,” he added.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed praised the German delegation’s ongoing efforts to strengthen economic ties between the two nations.

He recalled the successful implementation of the Dual Vocational Education Project in Nigeria since 2012, which integrates theoretical learning with practical skills in partnership with the Nigerian Chambers of Commerce.

Dr. Mathias Leder, President of IHK Giessen-Friedberg, underscored the importance of language skills for Nigerian migrants in Germany, noting that it significantly improves their integration.

He also revealed that 98% of apprentices who complete Germany’s free dual vocational training program secure job offers.
