The Nigerian Government is committed to fostering national cohesion by ensuring that all segments of the society are represented in government
The country’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris who was represented by the Director General of the National Orientation Agency, Lanre Issa-Onilu stated this in a paper delivered at the maiden National Security Course for Psychological Operations and Strategic Communication organized by the Defence Intelligence Agency in Abuja on Wednesday, January 24, 2024.
“President Tinubu, who took office on May 29, 2023, has made appointments across ministries, departments and agencies that reflect the diversity of the country
“Let me hasten to state here that in his profound commitment to national cohesion, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) swore to uphold the constitution.”
According to him, the President is implementing the provisions of the constitution to prevent any part of the country from feeling alienated adding that Nigeria faces challenges to its national cohesion, such as historical prejudices, religious differences, ethnic diversity and misinformation.
He therefore called on the media to play a positive role in enhancing national cohesion by avoiding biased reporting or inflammatory content that can escalate tensions.
Idris also urged the media to counter misinformation and disinformation that can sow discord among Nigerians.
The Minister disclosed that he met with some tech companies to ensure a balanced approach that upholds both freedom of expression and safeguards against potential harms on social media.
“The Ministry will align its content regulatory framework with internationally recognized standards to ensure consistency with global best practices. This alignment reflects a commitment to a regulatory approach that respects diverse perspectives while addressing potential challenges,” he said.
The security course, organized by the Defence Intelligence Agency, was aimed at enhancing the capacity of security personnel in psychological operations and strategic communication.
The course was attended by senior military officers, intelligence operatives, civil servants and academics.
