The Nigerian government has been urged to ensure the full implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act of 2015, the Child Rights Act, and Disability Inclusive Policies across the country.

The call was made by the Chief Executive Officer of Noble Vessel Arise Initiative, Dr. Chioma Elezieanya, during an outreach programme for girls in Abuja’s Asokoro District.

Dr Elezieanya also emphasised the need for the government to prioritise digital safety and online protection for young people.

She highlighted the importance of educating adolescent girls about menstrual hygiene.

We spoke about menstrual hygiene, letting them know that menstruation is something they should embrace confidently. They shouldn’t be ashamed, as some girls hide in shame during their periods. Menstruation shows that the body is preparing for adulthood, and it should empower them. We told them their body is a temple, and they should carry it as such,” Dr. Elezieanya said.

In line with the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the outreach also addressed prevention of gender-based violence.

We visited secondary schools to educate girls about gender-based violence, which can take many forms, including physical abuse, sexual harassment, rape, intimidation, or coercion. We emphasized that they own their bodies and spaces, should not allow anyone to touch them without consent, and should avoid being in secluded spaces,” Dr Elezieanya added.

Sanitary pads were also distributed to the girls during the programme.

The Noble Vessel Arise Initiative is a women-led, youth-driven organization committed to advancing the rights, safety, and well-being of girls.
