The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) says it has begun restoration to parts of the country following the first national grid collapse of 2026, after a total outage was recorded on Friday.

According to a preliminary statement issued by NISO, the disturbance occurred at approximately 12:40 p.m local time leding to a total collapse of the interconnected national grid, cutting electricity supply across the country.

Initial operational reports indicate that the outage was caused by the simultaneous tripping of multiple 330kV transmission lines, combined with the disconnection of some grid-connected generating units.

These events collectively triggered the system collapse.

In response, grid restoration and recovery procedures were activated at about 1:15 p.m.

Electricity supply has since been restored to several locations, including Abuja, Osogbo, Benin, Onitsha, Sakete, Jebba, Kainji, Shiroro, and parts of Lagos. Restoration efforts are continuing in other areas nationwide.

NISO noted that, “Adetailed investigation is currently underway to determine the root and contributory causes of the disturbance.”

The operator assured the public that the full restoration and stabilisation of the national grid remains a top operational priority.

The latest incident adds to ongoing concerns about the stability of Nigeria’s power infrastructure, as stakeholders continue to call for sustained investments in transmission and grid management to reduce system collapses.
