Nigerian Leader Reiterates Appeal To University Lecturers

President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his earlier call on university lecturers currently on strike to sheath their swords and call off the strike.

The President, who made the appeal in his 62^nd National Day broadcast to the nation, said he was deeply pained by the recurring disruption of academic activities at the country’s citadels of learning.

He assured the striking lecturers that government will not relent in its effort to meet their demands.

“I must confess that I am very pained by the recurring disruption to our tertiary education system and I am using this Independence Day celebration to reiterate my call for the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities to return to the classroom while assuring them to deal with their contending issues within the limit of the scarce resources available,” he said.

The Nigerian leader emphasized that under his leadership, the current administration has made appreciable progress in redressing the issues affecting the lecturers, which have lingered for over 11 years.

He said the Nigerian government will continue to mobilize resources within and outside the country to fund education in order to ensure that citizens are well educated and skilled in various vocations, leading to economic growth and development.
