Nigerian Maritime University Signs Manpower Agreement with Defence Academy

The Nigerian Maritime University, NMU, in Delta State has signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU with the Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA on enhancing research and manpower development.
While signing the MoU at the NDA Headquarters in Kaduna, the Vice Chancellor of NMU, Professor Emmanuel Adiogio identified areas of mutual benefit to both Institutions to include maritime security and safety, maritime technology regulation and policies.
He said other areas of benefit to the Institutions included logistics and supply chain management, shipping, transportation management, terminal operations and shipping maritime operations.
Adiogio described the MoU between the Institutions as mutual, symbiotic and also critical to the public on the issues of security in the golf of Guinea.
He noted that regarding academics especially research, many of the NMU academic staff would come to the NDA to do their Doctorate Degrees and Masters.
“We also have qualified staff to take issues on transportation, as the NDA is providing programmes for our academic staff, we will also be providing them on knowledge in areas they don’t have”, he said.
He assured NDA that NMU would do its best to sustain the high standards in which the academy operates.
Responding, the Commandant of NDA, Major General Ibrahim Yusuf noted that the MoU would be mutually beneficial to both Institutions.
Describing NDA as a military university with strong post graduate schools, Yusuf noted the core areas of their specialisation to be defence and security.
He said the Institutions have something in common, that at the NDA they have Naval components which does a lot of studies and conduct operations within maritime domain while at NMU, they focus on maritime security and related issues in the maritime sector.
Yusuf stated that the collaboration with NMU would enable them strengthen areas of research and capacity building in the maritime domain particularly in the golf of Guinea.
“It will also enable us exchange resource persons, research materials and joints research related to defence and security, staff capacity development, among others”, he said.
He expressed optimism that the MoU, which would facilitate and enhance collaborative research, would project outcomes that would be beneficial to the military sector and Nigeria in general.
Yusuf also expressed appreciation to NMU for coming up with the initiative and assured them of the academy’s readiness in providing all the necessities to realise the objectives of the MoU.
