Experts have called on Nigerian Media to play a more decisive role to ensure that the information and stories shared in the public space are credible and balanced.

The experts advised the media to maintain professionalism at all times especially when it has to do with health-related issues.

Abisola Ariwodola, the State Secretary of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWJ), Osun State said; “The media are the voice of the people and the eye of the government, which is why the media must be more proactive when reporting and sensitizing the public on health issues that are causing epidemics. We must remember our roles as intermediaries and give prompt and adequate reports of step-by-step activities for any health issue or disease.”

Speaking in an Interview in Osun State on Tuesday, Ariwodola emphasised the role of the media, which involves massive sensitization and advocacy for the government to pay greater attention to epidemic management, response, and funding.

Since the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic happened, there has been an overwhelming increase in misinformation regarding health matters.

Fears and myths surrounding the virus increased disinformation and heightened suspicion among the people.

The Director-General of the World Health Organisation, WHO, Tedros Ghebreyesus, drew the attention of the world to this when he stated that “We’re not just fighting a pandemic but an infodemic.”

He also drew the attention of the world to the wave of disinformation undermining policy responses and amplifying distrust and concern among the people.

Leveraging the media is therefore pertinent to counteract disinformation and support policy concerns on epidemic response funding and health security.

The Chief Executive Officer of Cloud Clinic, Ifeanyin Aneke, says the role of the media in sensitizing the citizenry cannot be underestimated.

In his words, “The media did a very good job during Covid-19. They are very powerful, and there’s a lot they can do to make health care accessible and convenient.”

He said; “The media must capitalize on its platform and be a bridge between the public, the government, and stakeholders in the health sector.”
