Media professionals in Nigeria have been called upon to uphold the core values of integrity, fairness, and transparency while fostering diversity and inclusivity in their reporting.
The Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, made this appeal during a courtesy visit by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council to the VON headquarters in Abuja.
Ndace emphasized that ethical journalism plays a crucial role in maintaining public trust, ensuring accountability, and delivering accurate information, especially in an era of widespread misinformation. He urged journalists to remain committed to professional standards that enhance credibility and safeguard the integrity of the media landscape.

“The role of journalists and journalism is even much more critical in the 21st century, in the age of misinformation, disinformation, and outright lies. In a situation whereby traditional and credible online media are being challenged by fake news, misinformation and disinformation.
“NUJ and all of us who are members of this proud profession have to stand up and be counted and make sure that those who are members are people who, even when you don’t agree with them, it’s not that because they have done something wrong,” he said.
“The world has changed. A journalist should not be garbage in, garbage out. In an increasingly digital world, journalists must adapt to emerging technologies,” he stated.
The VON DG urged journalists to join additional professional bodies to enhance their skills and networks, and to diversify their income sources to ensure financial stability.
He reiterated the commitment of VON to continue to work with NUJ to ensure the integrity of the profession.
The Chairman, NUJ FCT Chapter, Grace Ike, said NUJ prioritizes fostering unity and professionalism among journalists and seeks to align with VON’s mission to uphold ethical journalism, counter misinformation, and amplify voices that shape the nation’s narrative.
According to her, “As we explore opportunities for collaboration, we envision a range of joint initiatives that can significantly impact the media landscape in the FCT and beyond.”
She stated that the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) seeks synergy in areas of career progression and public enlightenment, adding that the union aims to foster collaboration among media professionals to enhance skill development and establish clear pathways for career advancement.
“These initiatives will not only enhance the quality of content on your platform but will also contribute to the greater goal of a more informed, educated, and engaged public,” she added.
