The Director Defence Information, Major General Micheal Onoja has revealed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria are at an advanced stage of implementing measures to curb the use of drones by non-state actors, while also assuring the public of transparency in investigating allegations of extortion against military commanders.

The Nigerian military has raised concerns over the growing capacity of criminal groups and non-state actors to deploy drones for illicit activities.

Major General Micheal Onoja made this known during interactive session after briefing Journalists on the ongoing Military Operations in the month of January, 2026 in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Major General Onoja disclosed that the Armed Forces, in collaboration with other federal agencies, are working to trace the sources of these drones.

He emphasised that concrete actions will soon be unveiled to address the threat, noting that relevant agencies with the capacity to prevent drone misuse have already been alerted.

Speaking on the matter, Onoja commended the Armed Forces for their proactive stance in tackling emerging security challenges.

He assured Nigerians that the military is committed to safeguarding national security and will not relent in adopting modern strategies to counter evolving threats.

According to him, the measures being developed are expected to yield results in the coming days and months.

Meanwhile, allegations have surfaced from soldiers accusing a commander of demanding ₦500,000 weekly returns from checkpoints.

Addressing the issue, Major General Onoja stressed that the military operates as a transparent institution and takes such claims seriously.

He acknowledged that while allegations are common in the age of social media and artificial intelligence, they remain unverified until concrete evidence is provided.

He assured the public that if details of the allegations are substantiated, investigations will be conducted and anyone found culpable will face disciplinary action.

Onoja reiterated that the Nigerian military has a tradition of self-regulation and accountability, and will not hesitate to act against misconduct within its ranks.
