Nigerian Police Launches School Protection Squad In Anambra

In a significant move towards enhancing the security of educational institutions across Nigeria, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has officially launched the ‘School Protection Squad’ (SPS) in Anambra State.

The initiative, which aims to promote safety within schools, was unveiled during a stakeholders’ forum at the Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre in Awka on Wednesday.

During the event, Egbetokun emphasized the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders, including teachers, community leaders, and parents, to create a safer learning environment for students and educators.

Egbetokun who was represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 13, Godwin Aghaulor, stated that the safety and security of our educational institutions are paramount.

The SPS initiative is designed to strengthen the security resilience of schools by integrating the support of host communities in education protection.

The  Egbetokun highlighted that this program is part of a broader effort by the Nigerian Police Force, which includes training State Coordinators and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) nationwide.

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam who lauded the launch described it as a timely response to ongoing security concerns in the state.

He called for a multi-faceted approach to security, including regular assessments and enhanced surveillance systems.

“This initiative will improve community relations, increase resilience to conflicts, and provide better protection for educational infrastructure,” he noted.

Professor Chukwuma Soludo, Governor of Anambra State, represented by his deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, also expressed strong support for the SPS initiative.

He called upon community members to take ownership of the security of schools and encouraged collaboration with law enforcement agencies. 

“Protecting our schools and our children requires a united front.

“We need to foster a culture where everyone plays a role in ensuring safety within our communities.

“The launch of the SPS in Anambra marks a proactive step towards enhancing the security of educational institutions in Nigeria,” he stated.

The event climaxed with a panel discussion focused on the critical role of the police in maintaining safety in schools.
