Nigerian Scholar becomes President of University in New York

A Nigerian scholar, Professor Peter Nwosu has been inaugurated as the first black president and the first immigrant to take the leadership role becoming the 11th president of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Oswego, in the United States.

In his inaugural speech as President of the State University as contained in materials received from the Univerty’s Director of Communications, Office of Communications and Marketing, Tim Nekritz, Professor Nwosu stated that his vision for SUNY Oswego is to strengthen the culture of excellence, innovation and inclusion that the University has been known for.

The historic occasion took place on Friday, 27th September 2024 where the Nigerian scholar who is a graduate of the Harvard Institutes for Higher Education took the helm of affairs in the 163-year legacy of the New York-based educational institution popularity known as SUNY Oswego.

Professor Nwosu emphasized that he intends to keep the tenets of the Chancellor and the board of trustees’ four pillars which include students success, research and scholarship, diversity, equity and inclusion and economic development and upward mobility

“Today marks an extraordinary moment in our journey and I am humbled to stand before you as the 11th President of the State University of New York at Oswego, thank you for placing your trust in me to lead this remarkable institution. I stand on the shoulders of 10 presidents, giants who led this institution including my predecessor

“As we gather here today we celebrate not just an investiture but reaffirm a promise made 163 years ago by our founder Edward Austin Sheldon. That institution he founded has grown into the vibrant friendly campus by the Lake offering more than 140 graduate and post graduate degree programs across numerous disciplines, producing more than 95,000 alumni.”

He further described the university as a beacon of hope where curiosity meets purpose, engaging with the complex issues of modern time regardless of background while encouraging students to pursue their passion through hands-on opportunities and practical experiences as well as empowering them to reach their fullest potential.
