The Nigerian Senate has screened and confirmed seven ministerial nominees named last Wednesday by President Bola Tinubu.
The screening of the nominees was done at the committee of the whole, while their appointments were confirmed at plenary
President Bola Tinubu sacked five ministers, re-assigned 10 to new ministerial portfolios and appointed seven new ministers for Senate confirmation.
Voice of Nigeria’s National Assembly Correspondent reports that the country’s Upper Chamber suspended its rule on Wednesday to admit the seven ministerial nominees appointed after the exercise was postponed on Tuesday.
The screening exercise which started around 1:00 pm local time, started with Nentawe Yilwatda, the nominee appointed to replace Betta Edu as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.
Other appointees screened and confirmed are Bianca Odumegu-Ojukwu nominated as the Minister of State Foreign Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi nominated as the Minister of Labour and Employment, Jumoke Oduwole nominated as the Minister of Industry.
Idi Maiha as Minister for the newly created Livestock Development Ministry, Yusuf Ata as the Minister of State, Housing and Urban Development and Suwaiba Ahmad as Minister of State Education.
President Tinubu had in a correspondence to the Senate last week requested for the screening and confirmation of the seven nominees.
Their screening and confirmation was in compliance with Section 147 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended).
Senate president, Godswill Akpabio passed the request for their confirmation to the Senate Committee of the Whole for immediate consideration.
After their confirmation, Senator Akpabio congratulated the ministers-designate for their appointments.
