The president of the Nigerian Society of Engineers NSE, Engineer Tasiu Sa’ad Gidari, says the society intends to vigorously bridge the gap between the engineering industry and the academia.
Gidari stated this when he led a delegation of the new executive members of the society on a visit to Maiduguri, Borno state capital.
He said “our mission and administrative agenda is to have Industry and academic collaboration in the next two or three years because there’s a serious gap.”
Focus of new executive
The NSE president also outlined some of the key areas in the focus of the new Executives to include green energy for rural development.
He recalled that “in January 2022, we delivered 10 solar panels and inverters as alternative power supply to Proffessor Umaru Shehu Ultra-modern Hospital.
“The aim was to reduce the cost of operating and maintaining generators and to give patients in the hospital some comfort.
“More so, the NSE has created the North-east Rehabilitation and Development Committee, which became operational in the last two years of Engineer Babagana’s tenure.
“In line with this mandate, the NSE chose Maiduguri, the epicentre of the insurgency, to house the Committee’s secretariat.
“Our senior engineers are aging and young engineers are coming up. We need to transfer those experiences to the younger ones.”
The NSE president thanked the governor for his warm reception and said “it is my singular honour to lead this delegation of the presidential team to pay his Excellency a courtesy visit. This visit of the 33rd president of the Nigerian Society of Engineers is the first visit since I assumed office as the president of the society.”
The host, Governor Zulum who is also an engineer, happily noted the pledge by the new NSE Executives to bridge the gap between industry and the education system.
According to the Governor, “it’s a welcome development that needs our support.
“We shall support as engineers, all programmes that are meant to support the provision of green energy in our rural dwellings; we shall also support programmes that will ensure wealth creation through exploration of potential economy.”
He congratulated the new NSE president on his well deserved election and paid tribute to his predecessor, Engineer Babagana Mohammed.
“During Engineer Babagana’s tenure, many of our young colleagues were registered and also we received support to Internally Displaced Persons IDPs,” Governor Zulum stated.
