Nigerians Must Embrace Diversity and Unity- President Tinubu

Nigerians have been urged to be more committed to the unity and diversity of the country by living in peace with one another. 

President Bola Tinubu advised on Saturday in Lagos State, South-West Nigeria, at the public presentation of a book in honour of elder statesman, Chief Olusegun Osoba, as he marks his 85th birthday. 

The book titled “My Life in the Public Eye” chronicled the experience and contributions of Chief Osoba to Journalism and democracy in Nigeria. 

The event was a gathering of prominent Nigerians, especially politicians, as they celebrated an icon, with Vice President Kashim Shettima representing President Tinubu. 

Addressing the gathering, the President said Nigerians must learn from the attributes of Chief Olusegun Osoba especially that of ensuring unity at all times. 

He said: As we celebrate Aremo Osoba’s upcoming 85th birthday, I am grateful that he has remained healthy and active. I wish him a memorable birthday and many more years of good health. 

I would like to highlight one important aspect of Aremo Osoba’s life- his commitment to Nigeria’s diversity and unity. This is a vital lesson for our nation, particularly during these challenging times.” 

President Tinubu disclosed that his administration is taking measures that will help ameliorate the problem of food shortage among other challenges.   

As we work to overcome our current challenges, we must remember that unity and cooperation are essential. Our people must support our administration’s efforts to create better living conditions for all.  

“We are taking steps to address food shortages by temporarily removing tariffs on imported grains and other food items. We will continue to drive local production and ensure that we produce what we eat and use locally, added the President. 

Giving examples of what the octogenarian has done in fostering democracy in Nigeria, the President said: “Chief Osoba, whom I fondly call Aremo is a notable figure in our country, having excelled in various fields. In his journalism career, he achieved great success, and his contributions to politics have been remarkable. He served as the governor of Ogun State twice and made a lasting impact on the lives of his people. 

“One of his most notable achievements was his role as a leading figure in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO,) where he fought for democracy alongside others. We owe him a debt of gratitude for his sacrifices.” 

Knowledge Transfer 

The Nigerian leader commended Osoba for documenting his experiences for use by future generations. 

I would like to take this opportunity to thank him once again for documenting his life journey and experiences. His life will be a source of inspiration and hope for generations to come. 

“If Aremo Osoba has achieved his goals through hard work, determination, and perseverance, then there is hope for others to do the same. I commend him for giving us two books in quick succession, with this one being a follow-up to his 2019 memoir. I urge other leaders to follow Aremo’s example and write books to share their experiences and provide guidance for future generations,” he said. 

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, who also attended in the company of 24 Senators, said Chief Osoba has contributed a lot to humanity, adding that over the years, he has helped in shaping the future of democracy in Ogun State and Nigeria. 

“We thank the celebrant for launching a book today. By putting his thoughts on paper, he has helped in mentoring the younger generation. His contributions to democracy and journalism are enormous,” he said.

Senator Akpabio used the occasion to call on Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu in his quest to deliver hope to all citizens. 

Secretary to Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, praised the laudable attributes of the celebrant, which he said are worth emulating. 

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, described the celebrant as a towering figure, adding that Chief Osoba made a mark in public service and journalism within Nigeria and beyond. 

“He has made a mark in public service and journalism within Nigeria and beyond. His attributes are worthy of emulation and a reference point for our future generations. 

“His contribution to humanity has made him receive many chieftaincy titles,” he said. 

The Governor added that Chief Osoba has contributed a lot to the socioeconomic development of Ogun State. 

“His contributions to the evolution and stability of democracy will remain evergreen. Chief Olusegun Osoba’s contribution to the development, stability, and progress of Nigeria and Ogun State will continue to inspire us all. 

“His vision of quality education, human capital development, and healthcare are unique. We will continue to celebrate you and I call on Nigerians to celebrate their leaders and those who have served them while they are still alive,” he added. 

There were goodwill messages from former Secretary of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, business moguls, Mike Adenuga and Aliko Dangote as well as the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, who all praised the starling qualities of the celebrant, whom they wished more fruitful years.
