Nigerian diplomat, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye has been reelected for a second term as African Union, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, PAPS.
Adeoye defeated Ambassador Jean-Jacques Demafouth from Central Africa Republic 37 – 11 at the polls taking place at the ongoing 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive council in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar in a statement issued by the Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, has congratulated Adeoye.
Tuggar said Adeoye’s re-election was a testament to his outstanding leadership, diplomatic expertise, and unwavering commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability across the African continent.
Tuggar ststed that Adeoye’s “experience and leadership would be instrumental in strengthening peacekeeping initiatives, conflict prevention mechanisms, and regional integration efforts within the AU framework.
The commissioners election comes ahead of that of the Chair of the AU scheduled for Feb. 15 and 16 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Vying for the top role to succeed the former prime minister of Chad, Moussa Faki Mahamat, are former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Madagascar’s ex-Finance Minister Richard Randriamandrato, and former Djiboutian Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.
