298

In a major boost for Africa’s sustainable development, Nigeria’s APPL Hydropolis Project has achieved certification under the prestigious International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) standard.

The APPL Hydropolis Project is set to play a transformative role in driving sustainable infrastructure, cutting carbon emissions, and unlocking inclusive economic growth across Nigeria and the African continent.

Awarded by Baltic Control Certification Denmark, this certification validates the project’s compliance with Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) verification, greenhouse gas (GHG) calculations, and ISCC EU sustainability standards. This milestone reinforces Nigeria’s leadership in climate-conscious industrial innovation and strengthens its position in the global green economy.

The APPL Hydropolis Project, officially known as the Hydropolis Free Zone Development Company (HFZDC), is a large-scale industrial initiative dedicated to fostering sustainable development and industrialization. Located on approximately 2,000 hectares along the eastern bank of Kainji Lake in Niger State, the project is a collaboration between Hydropolis Investments Limited and the Niger State government. It is designed to support key sectors such as manufacturing, real estate, tourism, mining, education, healthcare, and smart infrastructure.

ISCC certification is a globally recognised standard for ensuring sustainability and supply chain transparency. Earning this certification establishes the APPL Hydropolis Project as a benchmark for environmental responsibility, not only in Nigeria but across Africa. By aligning with international sustainability standards, the project highlights Africa’s growing capacity to drive climate-friendly industrial development.

Speaking at the certification ceremony, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustainable industrialisation.

“This certification is more than just a recognition, it is a testament to the potential of African-led innovation in shaping the global green economy,” he stated.

“Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, we are committed to ensuring that industrial growth and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.”

The APPL Hydropolis Project is supported by a consortium of international sustainability leaders, reinforcing its global relevance and technical excellence. Key partners include:

  • DFDS (Denmark) – Experts in sustainable maritime logistics
  • ECOnnect Energy AS (Norway) – Specialists in offshore, low-impact energy transfer
  • Bergen Engines AS (Norway) – Manufacturers of efficient gas and diesel engines
  • H2 Core Systems GmbH (Germany) – Innovators in modular green hydrogen solutions
  • Longi (Europe) – Global leaders in solar energy technology
  • Baltic Control AS (Denmark) – Independent certification and compliance experts
  • Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) – The government agency responsible for strategic energy planning and research
  • APPL Hydrogen Limited – Represented by its Chief Visionary Officer
  • BSE Methanol GmbH (Germany) – Specialists in methanol-based renewable energy solutions

This international collaboration highlights the synergy between local ambition and global expertise, proving that large-scale sustainable industrialisation is achievable and replicable across Africa.

Chief Nnaji reiterated the government’s commitment to providing regulatory support, policy alignment, and a business-friendly environment to foster green innovation.

“This project stands as a beacon for Africa.”

“It sends a clear message to the world, we are not just part of the global green economy; we are ready to lead it,” he said.
