Nigeria’s Ayra Starr makes history with her debut on Billboard 200

Ayra Starr has been making waves with the release of her sophomore album ‘The Year I Turned 21,’ which continues to break chart records. In a significant milestone for the Grammy-nominated singer, ‘The Year I Turned 21’ debuted at No. 195 on the Billboard 200 after selling 8,000 units in its first week. This achievement makes Ayra Starr the first Nigerian artist to have an album debut on the Billboard 200.

Since its release on May 30, 2024, Ayra Starr’s ‘The Year I Turned 21’ has been lauded for its masterful fusion of genres and strong musical content. The album set a new record for the most Spotify streams in a single day for a Nigerian artist’s album, amassing 1.2 million streams on its opening day.

She also set the record for the highest global Spotify streams on an album’s opening day by a Nigerian female artist, with 6.3 million streams. Since her breakthrough into the Nigerian mainstream, Ayra Starr has achieved remarkable success, securing several milestones in the Nigerian music industry. Her hit single “Rush” is the most viewed music video by a Nigerian female artist and the only song by a Nigerian female artist to be certified diamond in France.
