The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has held a deliberation on the frequent Building collapse in Nigeria with the aim of finding a lasting solutions to avert further occurrence.
This was stated by the Council President Mr, Ali Rabiu, while briefing the journalist in Abuja the nation’s capital.
Mr Rabiu said based on the research made by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria they have identified challenges and solutions to the issues of frequent building collapse in Nigeria.
“Some of the key challenges we identified are the use of non-professionals, who have no capacity in projects and non-verifications of building designs.
“Availability of sub-standard building materials and non-legislation in enforcement of the National Building Code by the National Assembly also contributes to the frequent collapse of building in our country.”
Mr Rabiu, who also said that disparity between the design and construction in Nigeria’s physical planning is another factor that results in building collapse, added that the Development Control Officers also contribute to the issue.
While stating some of the solutions, Mr Rabiu said the government should set up a construction court to handle cases of misconduct and all the State Government should domesticate the codes of regulatory bodies in the building environment.
“Also Education of the populace, advocacy, enlightenment of the public and continued engagement of government should be pursued particularly by associations in the building environment.”
Mr Rabiu said they are expecting a positive outcome of these findings and solutions provided so far to end the challenges of building collapse in the country.
The deliberation acknowledged the presence of different stakeholders in the building profession, which vowed to put more effort in ensuring that the challenges of building collapse become history in Nigeria.
