The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume emphasised that Nigeria’s path to greatness lies in its unity, despite being a nation composed of diverse ethnic groups and people with varying backgrounds.

He stressed that the country’s strength lies in embracing its diversity and working together for a common purpose. This message underscores the importance of national cohesion as essential for the nation’s progress and prosperity

This he said on Wednesday while delivering the Convocation Lecture of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, in Awka, titled “National Integration for Unity and Progress”, Akume said the unity and progress of the country lie not only in the individual accomplishments but also in the collective strength and cohesiveness of the Nigerian people.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, General Services of the SGF office, Mr Maurice Mbaeri, he said it is the unity of Nigerians that forms the foundation upon which a prosperous and sustainable future can be built for all.

He noted that Nigeria is blessed with a rich and diverse heritage which includes a long indelible history, languages, cultures and traditions

“Yet despite this diversity, we are one nation. This unity amidst diversity is the essence of our national identity. It is a powerful force that transcends geographical boundaries and unites us in our shared aspirations. National integration is the feeling of oneness and unity among the citizens of a nation. This is a sentiment and recognition of being a single unit despite all the differences in beliefs, backgrounds, and practices”

He said that in a country as diverse as Nigeria, with its numerous ethnic groups, cultures, languages and religions, National Integration is both a challenge and a necessity. He pointed out that though Nigeria’s diversity is its strength, it can also be a source of tension if not carefully managed.

“The key to National Integration is the ability to embrace our differences while recognizing our common humanity. It is about creating an environment where every Nigerian regardless of their background, feels included, respected, and valued. The promotion of national unity, social justice, equal opportunity and peaceful coexistence is not just an ideal –it is the very essence of our national identity” he said.

The SGF also disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s role in National Integration in Nigeria has been visible through a multifaceted approach.

“His leadership is centred on building an inclusive, cohesive society where all Nigerians, regardless of their background, feel they have a stake in the country’s future. Achieving National Integration in Nigeria is a long-term challenge but with effective leadership, President Tinubu is determined to contribute significantly to the healing and unity of this nation” he stated.

Earlier in a press conference, the Acting Vice Chancellor of Unizik, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu said a great door has opened up for the university with the return of peace and tranquility in the campus after a period of crisis in the past.

He said it has been challenging to midwife affairs, peace and progress of the university at a time like this but the people are happy because they have worked as family.

“God has been faithful to us and has given us great strides within this period. We came up with the Blessed UNIZIK mantra and the blessings are manifesting in the aura of development springing up in the university.

“The days of the cankerworm, palmerworms and the scavengers of metals are over and we are rejoicing today. We have established the light up UNIZIK and it will continue to every corner and faculty of the university. The excellence is evident in every aspect; academics, infrastructure, and administration. We have started on a trajectory and we have tried to establish the foundation of progress and excellence,” Professor Ikechebelu said.
