The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and AKADEMIYA2063 are set to deepen collaboration in artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and climate research following a high-level engagement between both institutions.

The partnership aims to strengthen Africa’s capacity for climate monitoring, data-driven policymaking, and food security.

During a courtesy visit to NiMet headquarters, the Managing Director of AKADEMIYA2063, Dr Debisi Araba, met with the Director General/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, to explore specific areas of cooperation.

Prof. Anosike welcomed the delegation and reaffirmed NiMet’s commitment to advancing weather and climate services in support of national development.

He emphasised the increasingly critical role of AI and big data in modern meteorology and revealed that NiMet already has experts applying machine learning tools to improve data collection, analysis, and forecasting processes.

Dr Araba outlined AKADEMIYA2063’s mission to strengthen Africa’s food systems through enhanced climate resilience and a more robust data ecosystem.

He noted that many African countries continue to struggle with limited agricultural data, weak analytical capacity, gaps between research and policy and inadequate monitoring systems.

Addressing these challenges, he said, requires building a strong knowledge infrastructure and improving the translation of research into practical, evidence-based policies.

Leaders of both institutions expressed firm alignment in their shared goals of enhancing climate resilience and promoting sustainable development.

Both organisations agreed to establish a joint technical working group, develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), and hold follow-up engagements to begin implementing key initiatives.

The partnership is expected to deliver significant benefits for climate adaptation, agricultural planning, and environmental sustainability across Nigeria and the wider African region.
