The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert, warning of severe thunderstorms currently affecting and expected to spread across many parts of the country.
According to the forecast, intense thunderstorm activity is presently being observed over parts of Kaduna, Plateau, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kwara, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, and Cross River states.
The severe weather is predicted to propagate westwards as well, reaching Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, Plateau, the FCT, Kaduna, Niger, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, and Nasarawa.
The storms are also expected to extend to southwestern states, including Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti, and Ondo.
NiMet forecasts it will be accompanied by heavy rainfall, and issued a public advisory urging immediate precautions.
The Agency said; “State governments with a possibility of flash floods are strongly advised to activate their emergency response plans immediately.
“Residents should ensure warm clothing for vulnerable persons due to expected low night-time temperatures and are urged to fasten all loose objects outdoors to prevent them from becoming hazardous projectiles in strong winds.”
For personal safety, NiMet advised to disconnect electrical appliances from power sockets to avoid surge damage and to stay away from tall trees to avoid the danger of falling branches or lightning strikes.
“Airline operators are specifically advised to obtain updated, airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective and safe operational planning.
“All residents are strongly encouraged to stay informed by monitoring further weather updates from NiMet through its official channels,” the statement reads
The agency emphasised the importance of heeding these warnings to minimise the risk of property damage, disruption, and personal injury.
