The Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has reaffirmed that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is integral to modern meteorological services, enabling effective weather forecasting, data collection, analysis, and dissemination.
Prof. Anosike made this known during a courtesy visit to the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mr Kashifu Inuwa, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

The visit focused on strengthening collaboration and identifying strategic areas of partnership between both institutions.
Mr Inuwa described the partnership as long overdue, noting that ICT serves as a powerful catalyst for transformation across all sectors.

He reiterated NITDA’s commitment to deepening technology adoption, particularly within critical institutions such as NiMet that contribute to economic growth and national development.

In his remarks, Professor Anosike stressed that ICT is vital to modern weather services, especially in improving data processing, forecasting accuracy, and timely information delivery.
He explained that a partnership with NITDA would further enhance NiMet’s operational credibility and expand its impact across key sectors such as aviation, agriculture, the blue economy, and disaster risk management.
Professor Anosike also unveiled METEOWIZ, an innovative, in-house weather solution developed by NiMet staff—the first of its kind in Africa.

He noted that the software showcases Nigeria’s capacity for technological innovation and that collaboration with NITDA would help standardise the system and potentially position it for export in the future.

Both agencies agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to leverage ICT for improved meteorological data management, digital transformation, and innovation.
They also resolved to establish a joint technical committee to implement specific projects focused on integrating advanced IT solutions into meteorological operations and scaling up digital services.
The partnership between NiMet and NITDA is expected to foster innovation, enhance public service delivery, and strengthen Nigeria’s leadership in climate technology and digital development — contributing significantly to the nation’s sustainable growth agenda.
