The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning of severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall, with the potential to trigger flash floods in some states.

According to the alert, thunderstorms have been observed over parts of Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, southern Kaduna, Benue and Taraba, and are expected to move westward within the next one to six hours.

NiMet advised residents in these areas to avoid driving during heavy downpours, dress warmly to guard against low night temperatures, and secure loose objects to prevent accidents.

People are also urged to disconnect electrical appliances and stay away from tall trees to avoid injuries from falling branches.

Farmers were cautioned against applying fertilizer or pesticides before the rains to prevent nutrient loss.

Airline operators are being advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for safer flight planning.

Residents can stay updated through regular weather bulletins on www.nimet.gov.ng.
