NIOB Urges Stakeholders to Engage Professional Builders
The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), FCT chapter, has called on stakeholders in the construction industry to prioritise the engagement of professional builders to ensure quality construction and prevent structural failures.
This appeal was made by the Chairman of NIOB, FCT chapter, Mr. Usman Okehi, during an interview in Abuja on Monday.
Okehi highlighted the critical role of building construction in shaping communities and improving the quality of life for residents.
He emphasised that both residential and commercial structures significantly contribute to community development and the well-being of those living and working within them.
The chairman underscored the importance of engaging skilled professionals in the construction process, stressing that building construction is capital-intensive and requires expertise to avoid structural failures.
“It is no coincidence that building collapses in the country often occur when professionals are not involved,” Okehi stated.
He pointed out that professional builders ensure the use of quality materials, but it ultimately rests on clients to choose qualified experts for their projects.
Despite challenges such as fluctuating building material prices, Okehi assured clients that builders effectively manage construction projects without compromising on quality.
He reiterated the NIOB’s commitment to delivering optimum results and improving standards in the building sector.
Okehi also praised the Nigeria Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) for its role in conducting research on affordable and sustainable building materials.
He emphasised that such research is crucial for reducing construction costs, making housing more affordable, and bridging the housing gap.
“Cheaper, sustainable, and efficient materials will reduce construction costs, making housing more affordable and bridging the housing gap,” he said.
Additionally, Okehi stressed the need for continuous progress in fulfilling the NIOB’s mandate, particularly in advancing the building sector.
He called on stakeholders to support efforts to enhance construction practices, ensuring that all structures meet professional standards.
The NIOB remains the official professional body for builders and those entering the building profession in Nigeria, striving to promote excellence and safety in the construction industry.
