Nigeria’s National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) has solicited to join the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to develop new strategies and policy for the transportation sector,
The Director-General of NIPSS, Ayo Omotayo made this known when he led a delegation from the Institute on a courtesy visit to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, in abuja
He revealed that NIPSS carries out evidenced-based researches with present attention on transportation.
The Director General reiterated that the development of the transportation sector is the beginning of the development of any economy.
He also disclosed that the Institute has been engaged with critical stakeholders in the transportation sector and that the Institute will want to use the Sector to rejig developments in Nigeria.
While stating that the transport sector must be given its pride of place and that NIPSS is ready to work with the Ministries under the superintendence of their host.
Omotayo stated that most of the challenges that Nigerians are going through now can be traced to the inefficiencies in the transportation sector.
The Minister who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Olufemi Oloruntola revealed some upcoming events of the Ministry which include the Stakeholders’ Engagement on the National Land Transportation Policy (NLTP) as well as the Management Retreat for the Ministry of Transportation
“In all fronts, we appreciate what NIPSS does, and we will want to involve NIPSS
“We will designate our retreat, an engagement jointly with NIPSS.”
He asked the NIPSS to review the admission criteria into the Institute, which enrolls people in the rank of Deputy Directors and Directors, a category of people who are on their way out of Service and would not have enough time to fully apply what they have learnt.
According to him; “They couldn’t finish with the NIPSS course and get back to offer much to the system which sponsored them before they retire.”
“The System needs someone that will attend NIPSS and still return to be useful to the System.”
The call from the Minister therefore is; “You may have to think of getting down to consider Assistant Directors and below, those are the people that will finish with your course and still have some years to retire, thus having to give back to the system.”
The highlight of the visit was a presentation of an official plaque from NIPSS to the representative of the Ministty
