The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has inaugurated the National Cloud Sovereign Technical Working Group (TWG) to enhance Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and data sovereignty.

The initiative aims to develop a national cloud framework that promotes local data hosting, reduces dependence on foreign cloud services, and attracts hyperscale investments.

During the inauguration, NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, highlighted the significance of reinforcing Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and sovereignty. He emphasised the need for collaboration among stakeholders to attract investment, establish local data centres, and develop regulatory frameworks supported by accurate data.

The TWG will focus on creating strategies that enable Nigeria to build a resilient digital ecosystem. It will also ensure that policies and infrastructure align with global best practices while fostering innovation and regulatory compliance.

Major industry players, including Google, Medallion Data Centre, and Equinix, have expressed support for the initiative, pledging resources to advance its objectives.

This initiative is part of NITDA’s broader strategy to position Nigeria as a key player in Africa’s digital economy. By ensuring that sensitive data remains within the country’s borders, the agency aims to strengthen cybersecurity, improve digital services, and create an enabling environment for technological growth.
