The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has lauded leading technology companies, including Google, X, Microsoft, and TikTok, for their adherence to the newly established Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms and Internet Intermediaries.

Developed in partnership with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), the code is designed to enhance the safety and integrity of Nigeria’s digital ecosystem by setting best practices for online platforms to tackle harmful content and protect users’ rights.

NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, highlighted that the code aligns with international standards and reflects Nigeria’s commitment to fostering a secure and responsible digital environment. He noted that the agency’s proactive engagement with global tech giants has played a vital role in ensuring compliance and encouraging ethical conduct online.

  • 65,853,581 content takedowns.
  • 379,433 instances of content removal and re-upload after user appeals.

The implementation of the code marks a significant step towards regulating online platforms and protecting users from misinformation, hate speech, and other harmful content. Through the establishment of clear guidelines, NITDA aims to create a balanced digital space that preserves freedom of expression while safeguarding individuals and communities from online harm.

NITDA’s initiative underscores the importance of collaboration between regulatory bodies and technology companies in addressing the challenges of the digital age. The agency will continue to monitor compliance and engage with stakeholders to ensure the code’s success in promoting a safe and inclusive digital environment for all Nigerians.
