Audu explained that the conference was part of activities to commemorate the 2023 Physician Week with the theme, “This is Our Chance to Get it Right in the Health Sector”. He said that the physician week, which began on Oct. 22 would end on Oct. 28.

According to him, the free eye check was the association’s way of giving back to the society. He quoted the NMA President, Dr Uche Ojinmah, as calling on the Federal Government to commence the payment of the reviewed Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) and Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

Audu, who read the president’s speech at the press conference, also quoted Ojinmah as calling for the payment of accoutrement allowance for medical doctors and dentists.

He added that the president equally frowned at the plan by the federal government to stop the funding of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

Explaining the main task of the council, which was to regulate the medical and dental practices, the president, Audu added, equally called for continuous funding of the council.

“The act setting up the MDCN states that the Council shall be in perpetuity. The practice, whereby the government allows the council to elapse without replacement especially for long durations, compromises its ability to regulate medical practice properly. Under these circumstances, the Investigative Panel and Medical Dental Practitioners, which are organs of the council, cannot be constituted. If so, no case of medical negligence or malpractice can be investigated or tried”, he said.

He added that Ojinmah also implored doctors to take care of their own health to deliver the best of care to their patients.
