The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has refuted reports of an explosion at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC), clarifying that ongoing activities at the facility are part of routine maintenance.
In an official statement, NNPC Ltd. stated that operations at WRPC’s Area 1 were deliberately scaled down on January 25, 2025, to allow for necessary intervention work on specific equipment.
According to the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., Olufemi Soneye, this maintenance, which includes field instruments affecting stable operations, is essential to ensuring the production of key petroleum products such as Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Kerosene (Kero).
According to NNPC Ltd., the refinery’s maintenance is proceeding as scheduled, with Area 1 expected to resume operations in the coming days.

NNPC Ltd. reassured stakeholders of its commitment to ensuring an uninterrupted fuel supply and expressed appreciation for the patience and cooperation of all parties as maintenance efforts continue.
Recall that the once moribund WRPC was revived and resumed operations on 30 Dec. 2024 after a decade-long closure.
