NOA to Introduce Citizenship Studies in Schools Nationwide

The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, has announced that a new subject, Citizenship Studies, will soon be integrated into the curriculum across all educational levels in the country, from primary to tertiary institutions.

According to him, values, ethics and history of the country shall be made compulsory and be taught at those various levels of education.

Issa-Onilu disclosed this in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, during the town hall meeting organized by the Kwara State Directorate of NOA.

The Director General also announced that the agency will partner with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to introduce value orientation into the compulsory one-year programme of Youth Corps members while they are at their various orientation camps and throughout their service year.

Similarly, Onilu said the agency would work together with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) to train entrepreneurs on value orientation.The Director General revealed that the agency will organise a two-week orientation programme for all elected political officeholders across the country immediately after they assume office.

He announced that thirty-seven thousand (37,000,00) Nigerian youths would soon be engaged across the thirty-six states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja with one thousand per state engaged as Citizen’s Brigade.Also Read: NOA Debunks Report on Permission for Use of National Anthem

According to him, these categories of young Nigerians would be nurtured as model citizens and have the attitude expected of an ideal Nigerian.

He observed that most Nigerians between the ages of one to sixteen were already addicted to watching foreign cartoons but said the present leadership of NOA plans to change their upbringing to now watch cartoons that have Nigeria’s positive values and cultures and that are produced by Nigerians, stressing that with time, foreign cartoons that do not teach the younger ones our morals will soon be phased out.

Onilu appealed to Nigerians to be patient with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in terms of the hardship Nigerians are currently going through explaining that the government met a seriously challenging economy.

He, however, assured that the situation is being addressed while Nigerians will get out of it but pleaded with the citizens to continue to support and pray for the leaders and should not be allowed to be deceived by the opposition.In his speech, the State Director of the Agency, Mr Olusegun Adeyemi who retired on the same day, disclosed that all the programmes lined up by the agency are captured under the seven mantra which is what the National Value Charter details.Adeyemi described the National Values Charter as a social contract between the government and citizens where each party is expected to play its part.

He added that the National Values Charter has been approved by the Federal Executive Council and the Agency would be mobilised to execute it.

Adeyemi charged Nigerians to live up to the ideals of the Nigerian national anthem and allow the lyrics to modulate their behaviour.
