The wife of Anambra State Governor, Mrs. Nonye Soludo through her non-governmental movement, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, organised the first edition of Healthy Living secondary schools’ quiz competition in the state.
All secondary schools in Anambra took part in the competition. The finals of the competition, which took place at Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, was keenly contested by students that represented the six educational zones of the state, who emerged from the zonal elimination phases.
At the end of the very intense competition, Aguata Zone, made up of a trio of Chioma Chukwu, from Government Technical College, Umunze, Idoko Chioma, from Community High School, Nanka, and Okeli Chinaza, from All Saints Secondary School, Umunze, beat five other zones to win the competition.
Ogidi Zone, comprising Confidence Udeh, Saint Monica’s Secondary School, Ogbunike, Chidimma Anozie, from Saint Anthony of Padua, Nkpor, and Chidera Egbe of Union Secondary School, Obosi, was the runner-up.
Onitsha Zone’s Chinedu Eze, from Dennis Memorial Grammar School, DMGS, Onitsha, Sylvia Nzekwu from Trinity Secondary School, Onitsha, John Paul Iji of All Hallows Seminary, Onitsha, came third.
Questions from the quiz originated from different areas of the six pillars of the programme, which are taught in the Healthy Living School Clubs, including hygiene, environment, nutrition, reproductive health and basic life support.
Speaking at the end of competition, Mrs. Soludo praised all the contestants for showing keen effort to the programme as was seen in the way they performed, and urged them to continue to show commitment to the programme in their schools.
The governor’s wife, who announced that the competition will now be an annual affair, promised that the next edition will be fully packaged and more interesting.
She also urged the healthy living ambassadors and coordinators to continue to mould the students in the right sense, and ensure they learn and live by the principles of the crusade.
Earlier, the Executive Chairman of Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC), Professor Nkechi Ikediugwu, described the competition as a great platform for informal learning, and commended the governor’s wife for putting up the show to help students, especially those from indigent backgrounds.
The winner of the competition received a cash prize of two hundred-thousand-naira, runner-up with one hundred and fifty thousand naira, while the third-place winner went home with one hundred thousand naira.
There were also consolatory cash gifts for other participating schools.
