North Central: Journalists Association commiserates with Flood Victims

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), has sympathized with the flood victims in the North Central part of the country.

This was made known in a statement issued by the NAWOJ Vice President, Jamila Abubakar Zone D North Central, in Lafia the Nasarawa state capital.

The North Central geo-political zone consists of Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger and Plateau States, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“The effect is massive with loss of lives, farmlands washed away and houses submerged leaving victims displaced

“We are saddened by this development and more worrisome is the growing number of women and children in internally displaced camps and their exposure to outbreaks of diseases and crimes.“

She however commends the interventions by both federal and state governments as well as the FCT administration and other organizations to cushion the impact of the disaster on the people.

“We believe now is the time for Government to strengthen inter agencies’ collaboration and adopt sustainable solutions to the reoccurring cases of flooding in the country,“ she added

The Association Vice President, therefore, urged residents to heed early warnings by relevant authorities, while state governments and FCT administration should sustain awareness campaigns and implement town planning laws so as to prevent people from building in flood-prone areas.

She further solicits more relief materials from individuals and corporate organisations to mitigate the impact of the disaster on the people

Abubakar appealed for immediate resettlement of the victims to enable them to continue with their lawful businesses.
