The North East region and its environs will soon have cause to smile, as plans are underway to open all closed sectors will lead to revamping and enhancing its economic activities.
Chairman of the Board, North East Development Commission, Major General Paul Tarfa, Rtd, announced this at a press conference organised by the reconstituted Board of the Commission, in Abuja, Nigeria.
The press conference came following the first full meeting held by the Board members since its inauguration last year.
“We’ve just risen from our first full meeting since our inauguration last year. We just finished the tour of all the six States of the zone”, he said.
He said, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda for the common Nigerian, the Board is focusing on projects that will make market accessibility easier and bolster security within the region including ease of transportation.
“To embark on e-mobility programmes, that’s e-vehicles to alleviate the challenges in transportation across the zone”.
“It’s something new we’re doing and we are going to introduce it. We’ve completed all arrangements, and by the grace of God, transportation problems will be a thing of the past.
According to him, the Board will also focus on the continuation of the implementation of its Master plan, complete all ongoing projects within the region and embark on projects that’ll generate direct and indirect employment opportunities in the region.
“So many are going without work, so many are hungry, so many need to be employed. The opportunities must be created and that’s what we’re out to do”.
“To continue with intermittent food distribution intervention and compliment the efforts of both the States and Federal Governments to bring succour to the vulnerable and indigent in our communities “.
The Chairman stated that the Board also has six major road projects ongoing in all six States of the region which commenced mid-last year.
He noted that most of the projects were at the advanced stage of completion and will be fully ready and open, hopefully, by December 2024.
Major General Tarfa Rtd emphasised that the Board members have taken far-reaching decisions during the meeting to complement their efforts.
Throwing more light on the intermittent distribution of the palliatives, the Managing Director, of North East Development Commission, Mohammed Alkali said the Commission has worked a robust strategy to ensure that the items were distributed accordingly across the region.
“We’ve 1,058 wards in the North East, 48 Federal Constituencies, and 18 Senatorial Districts. All those areas have been mapped out and put in strategies to make sure we cover all the vulnerable and indigent in the North East”, he explained.
