The North Korean government is reportedly forming a new hacking group within its intelligence agency, the Reconnaissance General Bureau (RGB).

The new unit, named Research Center 227, will focus on developing “offensive hacking technologies and programs.”

This initiative aims to bolster the regime’s ability to target Western cybersecurity systems, steal digital assets, and enhance AI-based techniques for information theft.

The center will also respond to intelligence from North Korean overseas hacking units.

North Korean hackers have gained notoriety for targeting crypto exchanges and companies globally, with incidents such as the recent $1.4 billion hack of Bybit showcasing their capabilities.

The U.S. National Security Agency and the FBI have previously accused the RGB of engaging in hacking and espionage activities, further highlighting the threat posed by North Korea’s cyber operations.
