The Abia Warriors of Abia State claimed a vital 1-0 win against Wikki Tourist of Bauchi State in a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match, at the Umuahia Township Stadium in Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria.

The first real chance of the game fell to the visitors in the 22nd minute, Mustapha Abdullahi took a corner from the right hand and Nazifi Yahaya’s acrobatic effort was stopped by the crossbar after beating Abia Warriors goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke.

The ‘Umuahia Landlords’ found themselves ahead on the stroke of halftime thanks to a penalty from midfielder  Fatai Abdullahi. The referee ruled that Abia’s Paul Samson was tripped by Wikki’s Salisu Adamu in the box. Abdullahi has now scored three goals in this season’s NPFL.

The warriors, who barely had time to recover after they returned from Wednesday’s away game at Ilorin held on for the win as they continued with their impressive run of form. Abia Warriors have scored 11 goals in their last 5 NPFL matches, at least 3 more goals than any other team.

The club management’s decision to keep faith in experienced coach, Imama Amapakabo seems to be paying off as they look to be turning their season around.

The Abia state-based side now have a week to rest and recover before their crunch Oriental derby against Heartland at the Dan Anyiam Stadium next week in Owerri, Imo state.
