NPFL: Rivers Hold Akwa, Pillars, Nasarawa Cut Gap
Kano Pillars and Nasarawa United have intensified their chase for the Nigeria Professional Football League top spot after leaders Akwa United were held by Rivers United in Port Harcourt on match day 33 of the league.
Akwa United forward Charles Atshimene had given the Promise Keepers the lead in the 53rd minute and they held onto it until the closing minutes of the game. With just 3 minutes left, Bakary Bamba scored a stunning goal to rescue a point for the Pride of Rivers. The 1-1 draw means Rivers United remain unbeaten at home.
However, the result blew the title race open as Kano Pillars defeated Dakkada FC 2-0, while Nasarawa United beat MFM FC 1-0 at home. Pillars and Nasarawa cut the gap at the top to just three points.
With just 5 more games to play, Coach Kennedy Boboye’s team will cherish the point as they prepare to host Warri Wolves on matchday 34. Akwa United still leads the league with 3 points and still favourites to win the league title. Rivers United have dropped to fourth position on the log.
