NPFL: Rivers United Extends Unbeaten Run
Rivers United continued its unbeaten run in the Nigeria Professional Football League after a 1-0 victory against the visiting Lobi Stars in the match day 21 encounter at the Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Stanley Eguma’s side, who last tasted defeat in February, increased their unbeaten run to 10 games in the league. Nyima Nwagua’s left-footed shot gave the hosts the lead in the 15th minute.
After a tough fight between both sides, Lobi Stars suffered another blow as Ifeanyi Ogba got sent off in stoppage time. Ogba was shown a red card for a needless and reckless foul on Ndasi, which summed up Lobi’s afternoon in the Garden City as the match finished 1-0.
“It was a difficult match, highly tactical,” Rivers United coach Stanley Eguma said. “We got our goal very early in the game and one would have expected us to get more goals but i think the plays rested on that and couldn’t push further to the end of first half.
“In the second half, we came all out trying to push further to get more goals but it couldn’t come. I thank God and the players for the victory. We will take it from here.”
The victory meant Rivers United maintained the number one position on the log with 46 points from 21 matches, while Lobi Stars are in 17th with 22 points.
