NPMCN launches final phase of 2024 obstetrics training

The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), has launched the final phase of the 2024 Advanced Obstetrics Surgical Skills (AOSS) training in Lagos.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Ms Jennifer Eziuloh, Advocacy, Communications, and Campaign Manager at Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA), confirmed her organisation’s collaboration in the programme.

She said the training is part of the Global Health Workforce Programme, aims to strengthen healthcare by equipping doctors with advanced surgical skills to improve maternal and newborn outcomes.

“To date, 82 NPMCN examiners and 118 residents from institutions in Abuja, Kano, Enugu, and Lagos have been trained,” Eziuloh stated.

She added that the year-long programme addresses gaps in managing obstetric complications, enhancing doctors’ surgical and decision-making skills.

Citing the World Health Organisation (WHO), she noted that Nigeria accounts for 20 per cent of global maternal deaths, highlighting the need for the training.

Dr Oluwole Ayodeji, Faculty Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at NPMCN, encouraged participants to fully engage, emphasising the programme’s impact on Nigeria’s healthcare system.

“The training blends technical expertise with decision-making skills, increasing participants’ confidence in managing complex obstetric cases,” Ayodeji said.

He added that the programme effectively addresses healthcare challenges in the country.
