In a bold move aimed at enhancing communication and strengthening ties in education, trade, and other bilateral relations between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, the Director General of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (NTAC), Mr. Yusuf Yakubu, led a delegation to meet with the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Benin, Mrs. Eleonore Ladekan, in Cotonou.
During the meeting, Mr. Yakubu emphasised the pivotal role of NTAC in advancing South-South Cooperation by deploying skilled Nigerian professionals to address developmental challenges in partner countries.
He underscored Nigeria’s commitment to closer collaboration with the Republic of Benin, particularly in the areas of language learning and exchange.
“We aim to overcome the language barriers that hinder deeper relationships between our peoples, which is the ultimate goal of any diplomatic effort,” said the NTAC Director General.”
This collaboration will boost trade between our two countries and lead to better economic outcomes for all involved. Where language is a barrier, progress is limited.
Our efforts reflect the significant benefits we’ve already seen in our partnership.”
Mr. Yakubu outlined plans to send a number of English language teachers to Benin to support the effective learning and acquisition of English, while also fostering French language learning on Nigeria’s side.
He emphasised that the goal is to bridge the linguistic divide between the nations, which would enhance all aspects of their bilateral engagement, including trade, services, and cultural exchange.
Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Republic of Benin, Mrs. Eleonore Ladekan expressed her gratitude for Nigeria’s continuous support and acknowledged the positive impact of NTAC’s initiatives on capacity development in Benin.
She highlighted the establishment of the Nigerian International School in Cotonou as a significant achievement and affirmed the Republic of Benin’s desire to explore further opportunities with NTAC.
“The establishment of the Nigerian International School in Cotonou has brought tremendous value, and we are eager to explore more of what NTAC can offer,” stated Mrs. Ladekan.
She also reiterated Benin’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Nigeria for mutual benefit and thanked the NTAC delegation for their visit, extending her gratitude to President Tinubu for Nigeria’s ongoing dedication to the development of African sister nations.
