The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has strengthened its commitment to the welfare of media professionals by facilitating free eye surgeries for members in partnership with Nizamiye Hospital, Abuja.
The initiative, described as a milestone in health support for journalists, began with the successful surgery of veteran journalist and former NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Ndamadu Sule, who had battled visual impairment for seven years.
Expressing gratitude after the operation, Sule hailed the Council’s leadership for what he called an ‘act of compassion and true service.’
“I thank the NUJ-FCT for their support. I remain deeply grateful for this life-changing intervention,” he said.
The Council, under the leadership of Comrade Grace Ike, has also lined up additional beneficiaries. Two journalists, Nicholas Ngozichukwu and Kamoru Odunlami have been scheduled for surgery after medical assessment.
Others who could not undergo immediate procedures have received medications and follow-up care.
According to the NUJ, the intervention forms part of a broader healthcare agenda to promote journalist welfare through strategic partnerships.
The Council’s collaboration with Nizamiye Hospital is the first of its kind in recent years, reflecting a renewed drive to prioritise the well-being of media practitioners in the capital.
Beneficiaries and colleagues commended the initiative, noting that “the scheme has not only restored hope but also underscored the union’s responsibility to its members.”
