The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, has called for greater investment in women, stressing that empowering women strengthens families, communities, institutions and nations.

Ike made the call in a statement to commemorate International Women’s Day, noting that the 2026 theme, “Give to Gain,” highlights the importance of deliberate investment in women through education, mentorship, opportunities and access to resources.

According to her, supporting women goes beyond assisting individuals, as it ultimately contributes to building stronger and more inclusive societies.

She said the celebration holds special significance for her as the first female chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, noting that her emergence reflects the possibilities that arise when women are given the opportunity to lead and excel.

I stand on the shoulders of many courageous women who broke barriers, challenged stereotypes and refused to accept limitations placed on their dreams,” she said.

Ike explained that empowering women creates a ripple effect across society, leading to more inclusive newsrooms, richer storytelling and more responsive governance.

She commended female journalists across Nigeria for their resilience, professionalism and commitment to truth and public service, noting that many continue to break new ground by covering challenging assignments, shaping public discourse and mentoring younger colleagues.

The NUJ FCT chairman, however, stressed that the celebration should go beyond recognition and translate into concrete actions that promote women’s advancement.

She called for deliberate efforts to mentor young female journalists, create safe and supportive workplaces, expand leadership opportunities for women and ensure their voices are included in decision-making processes.

Ike also referenced the global call by the United Nations themed “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” describing it as a reminder that achieving gender equality requires collective responsibility.

She urged governments, institutions, media organisations and communities to work together to remove barriers that hinder women’s progress.

While celebrating women within the NUJ, the FCT media community and across Nigeria, Ike said their courage, intellect and dedication continue to inspire younger generations to believe that leadership is possible.

She therefore called for renewed commitment to providing greater opportunities, support, mentorship and recognition for women, noting that when women rise, journalism grows stronger, communities prosper and the nation becomes better for it.
