NUJ Pledges to Implement Life Insurance Scheme for Members

The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Mr. Alhassan Abdullahi, has pledged to intensify efforts toward ensuring improved remuneration and life insurance coverage for practicing journalists across the country.

Mr. Yahya made the pledge while receiving condolence visitors from some of the state councils of the NUJ, as well as Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Gombe State Command, over the deaths of seven members of the union, which occurred during a tragic vehicle accident on Sunday, 29th December, 2025.

The NUJ’s National President stressed that adequate remuneration and life insurance were essential to enable journalists discharge their professional duties diligently and effectively.

He noted that many journalists had lost their lives while discharging their constitutional duty, emphasising the need for institutional support through life insurance policies in recognition of the sacrifices they make for society.

Mr. Yahya cited incidents in Plateau, Akwa Ibom, as well as Gombe States, where journalists lost their lives while performing their duties, calling for better welfare packages and rewards for media practitioners.

Also speaking during the condolence visit, the Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Dauda Iliya, commiserated with the NUJ and the families of the deceased over the tragic loss of seven union members in an auto crash.

Speaking on behalf of the General Manager and Management of the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA, the Manager of NTA Damaturu, Mr. Ahmed Aliyu, acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the journalists who lost their lives, describing them as professionals who played vital roles in shaping societal narratives.

In his remarks, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Gombe State Command, Mr. Samson Kaura, extended his deepest condolences to the families of the journalists who lost their lives in a motor accident along the Gombe–Yola Road.
