The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has called on Journalists to use their platforms to promote peace, unity, and tolerance.

The Chairman of the Council, Ms. Grace Ike, speaking during the iftar ‘Breaking of Fast’ with Muslim journalists in Abuja, urged media professionals to engage in responsible journalism and ensure sustainable development.

She highlighted the role of journalists in shaping narratives that either divide or unite society, with Nigeria being a multi-ethnic and multi-religious nation.

“I am grateful to all Muslim journalists for their dedication to truth and service. I also extend goodwill to our Christian faithful during this Lenten period.

“As Muslim and Christian journalists, we have a responsibility to report stories that foster interfaith dialogue and tolerance. By highlighting our shared values, we can bridge divides and counter prejudice.”

While emphasising the need for fairness in reporting, Ike urged journalists to use their platforms for peacebuilding.

“As Muslim journalists, let us embody the values of Ramadan—compassion, humility, and service in our professional lives. Together, we can create a narrative that inspires hope and harmony for all Nigerians,” she added.

The Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, also stressed the importance of mutual relationships and unity during Ramadan.
Represented by the Deputy Director, Digital Media, Voice of Nigeria, Qasim Akinreti, he said the event underscored the significance of unity, responsible journalism, and interfaith harmony in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic and social fabric.

“The essence of Ramadan is to bring people together-to sit, dine, and share in unity,” he said.

Delivering a Ramadan sermon, the Deputy Imam of Sabolugbe Mosque, Yusuf Abdulateef Olaoye, highlighted the spiritual, social, and personal significance of Ramadan.

“Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, a sacred period of fasting, reflection, and spiritual growth for Muslims worldwide,” he said.

He elaborated on its importance, citing key Islamic teachings.

“Ramadan is an opportunity for spiritual renewal, mercy, and forgiveness.

“It was in this blessed month that the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), citing Quran 2:185.

“Ramadan fosters community spirit, as Muslims come together for Iftar and Tarawih prayers. It is also a time for increased charity and generosity,” he said.

Representing the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Olutunji Disu commended the NUJ FCT Council for its contributions to security awareness and public enlightenment.

“We have been working together as a united force, and we shall continue to live as brothers. The NUJ FCT Council has played a vital role in disseminating security information to the public, amplifying our voices, and providing crucial intelligence that aids our work,” Disu affirmed.
