The President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Alhassan Yahya has called for unity among journalists nationwide to collectively transform the media landscape.

Speaking at a reception in Abuja in honour of the immediate past NUJ President, Chris Isiguzo, Yahya emphasised the need for collaboration in tackling key challenges in the profession, particularly in remuneration and media protections.

He said; “We are here to celebrate someone who has made remarkable contributions to our union. I sincerely appeal to all of us to work together towards redefining the narrative by developing new strategies that will elevate our union, especially concerning the remuneration of Nigerian journalists. “

Yahya announced plans to establish a committee to draft a media enhancement bill, which will involve a wide range of stakeholders, including the Guild of Editors, the International Press Institute (IPI), the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), and international NGOs.

We will incorporate everyone, including sister organisations and NGOs aligned with our thematic areas,” he explained. “Together, we will take this initiative to the National Assembly. We have identified members who are willing to sponsor this bill. With their support, we will change the narrative,” the NUJ President said.

Yahya said that members of the National Assembly were ready to support the initiative and expressed optimism for a future where journalists enjoy better protection and recognition.

Also speaking at the event, the immediate past NUJ President, Chris Isiguzo commended Yahya’s leadership and reflected on his own tenure.

It is heartwarming to witness this happening before my very eyes,” Isiguzo said, noting that Yahya had successfully continued many of the reforms initiated during his presidency.

Reflecting on the proposed Media enhancement bill, Isiguzo expressed optimism that this time the initiative would succeed.

He said; “We failed in the past because we thought we could do it alone,” he admitted. “But this time, we have key media stakeholders coming together to say, ‘This is our project.’ With the involvement of organisations like the International Press Institute and the Nigerian Guild of Editors, we have a real chance of making it happen.”

Protection of Journalists

Isiguzo also underscored the urgent need for a legal framework to protect journalists in Nigeria.

He said; “It is unfortunate that, to date, there is no specific law in Nigeria safeguarding journalists.

“We have been advocating for necessary legislation, and I am confident we will achieve it soon.”

Isiguzo stressed the importance of unity within the NUJ and pledged continued efforts to improve working conditions for journalists across the country.

Our prayer is that you will succeed, and by the time your tenure ends, there will once again be a peaceful transition,” he added.

Vice Presidents Adeiza Momohjimoh (North Central), Ronke Samo (South West), and Zare Baba (North East) praised Isiguzo’s leadership, insisting that he laid a solid foundation for the current administration to build upon.

“The President is kind, approachable, and a true leader who genuinely cares for those around him,” Ronke Samo said.

He is a man of integrity, reliable and trustworthy. You can entrust him with anything and have peace of mind.

“Dr Chris Isiguzo is a man of his word who leads by example. While he is not divine, he has handled every responsibility given to him with great care. We may not have much to offer, but you have made a lasting impact on our lives. We will make you proud,” she added.

The event was graced by notable figures, including the first female Deputy National President of the NUJ, Dr Bimbo Oyetunde; the National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Hajiya Aisha Ibrahim; Chairman of NUJ FCT and Comrade Grace Ike; NAWOJ FCT Chairperson.
