Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, Voice of Nigeria chapel, has sensitized its members and other female staff members of the corporation on cervical cancer.
The health awareness event which took place at the Lagos office of the media house was the first to be organized following the inauguration of the new executive of the Union.
The guest speaker, Dr Adaorah Momodu of Sebeccly- Oncopadi Cancer Care, pointed that cervical cancer is the second common kind of cancer that affects women in Nigeria but its preventable and as such it is necessary for women to take precautionary measures.
“Firstly is for the participants to be aware that something like cervical cancer exists, get information about it and prevent it through vaccination for women who are not yet sexually active as early as age 9 to 13 and all the way to 26 years old”, she said.
Dr Momodu advised women who are sexually active to have the cervical cancer screening yearly or every 3years, stating that it is curable.
Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the cervix. The cervix is a hollow cylinder that connects the lower part of a woman’s uterus to her vagina.
About 100 participants at the event got referrals to a free cervical cancer screening test at various medical centers in Lagos.
The Chairman of NUJ VON chapel, Olajumoke Falaye expressed gratitude to the executive members, VON RATTAWU executive, NAWOJ and other top dignitaries for their collaboration, support, patience and attendance at the Health Talk program.
The chairman, Lagos council of NUJ, Mr Adeleye Ajayi along with other state executive members was also part of the stakeholders that graced the event.
